A Hot Cocoa Kind of Day!

This weekend I’m having some fun at home working on some layouts with a very cute fun new collection that I was so excited to buy! It is called Winter Wonderland by Pebbles. No I do not have my holidays mixed up, I just couldn’t wait to use this collection so I jumped right into it last night and today.  I think the mittens and hot chocolates and little travel mugs of hot coffee are the sweetest. I picked it up last weekend at My Stamping Studio in Windsor. I had been down there at her shop’s scrapbooking and card making weekend. Here I am with my scrappy girlfriends, who I have become very good friends with, and here’s a shot of our cropping space.

Here is the double page layout I created with this fun line of papers. I didn’t buy the stickers that came with it because they were very girlie and juvenile and therefore did not appeal to me. As it is I’ll probably have a bit of trouble finding photos to go on these pages! I’ll have to specifically take some of me enjoying hot yummy beverages in fuzzy socks with girlfriends or Maria and Emma…………….. or something! But these colours and patterns so spoke to me, I just loved them, so I got them and had fun creating pages with them. They’re all ready just waiting for photos, and I may embellish them a bit more with snowflake brads or buttons, both of which I’m out of right now.

I had a lot of fun layering all these sweet patterned papers, and using coordinating cardstock. All edges are inked in brown, although a nice navy ink would have been nice on the edges too although I didn’t have any. A few brads and enamel dots were used as well.

DSC_0055 DSC_0057Well thanks for looking, in Nova Scotia there’s no escaping the forth coming cold weather, so might as well make a pretty layout about it? Right? That’s my thinking anyways!  Now go enjoy your Halloween! Boo!

Bo Bunny Altitude Layout

Today I’m back on the blog with another wintery layout to share. This one is using the pretty collection called Altitude by Bo Bunny. I picked this collection up at The Cutting Garden on the weekend. Since purple isn’t really my boys’ thing, I had to use some pictures I took of the girls I keep for this layout. Here’s what I came up with:

In addition to the papers from Bo Bunny, I embellished this page with a silver snowflake from Michael’s, a silver snowflake from May Arts Ribbon, some gems and pearls from my stash, some purple and ice blue cardstock and a few foam dots. It was fun working with such pretty papers and elements!

DSC_0438 DSC_0437 DSC_0436 DSC_0434

Emma made a pretty nice subject don’t you think! What do you think of her pretty lipstick?? Goes nice with her snowsuit don’t you think? Thanks for looking and see you again soon!

This past weekend I spent in Truro, NS with 89 other paper crafting enthusiasts. Many many were scrapbookers, but some were card makers, and some were working on some very elaborate altered projects. It was very inspiring to walk around  the room  and see what people were creating, there was a great deal of talent in that conference room. It was plainly obvious that these people were serious about their crafts!

Throughout the course of the weekend I completed 14 pages. At one time, I would make 30-40 pages in a weekend, but they were far less elaborate at that time. Now I do a fair amount of layering of my papers and inking, thanks Tracy McLennon, and these things are time consuming. Talking is time consuming too though I must say…….did my fair share of that too. But that’s all part of the fun!

So here is the first layout of the weekend that I’ve decided to share. It’s made using Warm and Cozy by Carat Bella, released in 2014. I picked it up at My Stamping Studio in Windsor, NS. It features a photo of my dog Nessa.  Apart from the items that came in the collection I embellished this page with some wooden snowflakes (LOVE!!), a brass snowflake, some buttons and some tickets I bought, which were from Tim Holtz.  They’re becoming very popular these days as an accent to any page. All edges are inked in brown as well. Popping some elements of the page up a bit using foam dots is something I also love to do for added interest. Thanks for looking and have a scrappy day!

Snow Fun by Simple Stories

Good afternoon! Today I am stopping by the blog to share two layouts I created recently using a newly released kit by a hot company in the paper crafting world right now, one of my personal faves, Simple Stories. This kit is called Snow Fun. I love the colours in it especially! My family does lots outside in the winter so you’d think I’d have lots of winter pics to choose from, to put on this layout, but alas the kids and my hubby are always dressed in camou and Helly Hansen heavy winter work wear and they just don’t make for the most “attractive” subjects for such pretty winter paper collections! Printing your pics in black and white or sepia often helps when your pics just don’t go great with the paper collection you’re desiring to use. One of these days I’m gonna get my “men” to dress up nice and go outside near some snow laden trees or on a pretty snowy bridge and I’m gonna take their pictures for some “nice” snowy layouts. Until then, I’ll have to settle for the real them, mismatched, dirty, heavy work wear and camou and all. After all, that’s who they are!

So here’s the first layout, it’s just a single page layout for one 5×7″ photo. I just love the little “tickets”, I love using them to embellish!

The little journalling box down in the corner is all ready for me to tell the story of what we were doing that day! Some of the tickets are raised up a bit with foam dots to add a bit of interest. Finish it off with a bit of green ribbon and a few enamel dots and pearl dots, and presto, all ready for a special photo.

Here’s the second layout I did, I made this one following a sketch from My Stamping Studio. Kelly used it during one of her Layout Frenzy’s. It will eventually contain a minimum of three photos so that’s great! The paper cut and adhered on an angle adds a little something different visually to this layout.  Thanks for looking and get out and do something wintery today and create a layout about it!! Winter layouts are fun! If you live somewhere where there is no snow or winter, consider yourself lucky! There’s lots of other layout topics out there! LOLDSC_0207

All Bundled Up…and more

Today I thought I’d share more of my favorite winter/snow collections that I have on hand. I particularly like these collections because they aren’t too feminine. I have two teenage boys and a husband, and nothing about the activities they (or we) do call for mauve and baby blue and pink snowy paper collections. Believe me I see these collections and they are pretty, but I just personally find them very hard to use. Lots of people use them that’s for sure but I’m happy to see something different from that.

Here is the first collection I’m dying to use. It is red and blue and I just love the mittens. It’s called All Bundled Up by Carta Bella. I can see me using it for pics of the children I keep playing outdoors or a neighborhood coasting party. This collection I picked up in full from My Stamping Studio In Windsor.

I just love the cut up sheets for quick embellishments, journaling cards and they also make easy title cards for pages. I also really love navy blue and red and use it often.

The second collection I’m going to feature today is called Sleigh Bells Ring by MME. It’s very masculine, and some would say dark. I don’t see it as dark, but people with small children may not find it jolly and bright and colourful enough, but it suits well for camp photos in the winter and men and grown boys. So that’s what I intend to use it for.  Again I picked up this full collection and all those awesome embellishments from My Stamping Studio in Windsor.

I guess I didn’t take a pic of the B side of the papers, but they’re smaller more basic prints that will offset the busyness of the A sides well. I want to draw your attention to the wooden enamel dots here, aren’t they totally cool!

Lastly I want to share with you another favorite winter collection called Warm & Cozy again by Carta Bella. Again someone with little girls or two year old little boys or someone who lives mainly a city life, may find this dark and uninviting but for a more mature, outdoorsy crowd it’s a welcome change. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this one. It features two of my favorite scrapping colours too, navy blue and deep dark red. Awesome!!! This collection also leans itself towards a trip to the Christmas tree lot, or even better…..a ski lodge layout, chalet pictures, hot chocolate by the fireplace etc. Especially for adults. Which again I say is a welcome change in the scrapping world. Well done Carta Bella. And yes, it’s all available at My Stamping Studio as well.

I especially love snowflakes so that last paper is a favorite of mine. This collection also has some of those handy cut up sheets I love to use.

Well looks like better get out and get some pictures so I can use all these wonderful collections, because Lord knows by next year there’ll be four or five new collections I’ll be wanting!! We have some snow now, so off I go!! Have a great day!

Brrrrr…….it’s Cold Outside!

It is cold here in Nova Scotia today, -15 degrees celcius with a wind chill that makes it feel like -30 degrees celcius. So one can not help but think about winter, and seek out things to do inside to amuse one’s self….for me, that’s scrapbooking, reading, baking and cooking, or TV usually. So today I was looking through my winter paper collections, thinking I’d get an idea what I wanted to be sure to get pictures of this winter, so I could be sure and get good use out of all the beautiful paper packs and embellishments I have purchased!!

As much as I dislike the severe cold such as we have today, and I choose to hibernate inside rather than go out in it when not required, I love scrapbooking winter stuff. People in warmer climates don’t get this chance, to participate in the fun winter activities or scrapbook them, unless they travel to the snowy parts of the world. Really it’s too bad. Although I could really do with only about two months of winter as opposed to five!!

I really don’t mind winter on the milder days though, as long as there is snow….my family gets a lot of enjoyment out of the winter. Whether it’s skating outside on a frozen pond, coasting or sledding, downhill skiing, just playing in the snow, building sculptures and snow forts and tunnels, snowball fights, and let’s not forget snowmobiling! I’ll partake if it’s not too cold, and I love being there to capture all the fun with my camera! And then, everyone is hungry for some yummy comfort food, hot chocolate and ready for a good night’s sleep in a cozy bed after a good day outdoors. I am glad for the snow also so I can use all these pretty collections for layouts!

So, on to today’s post. I’m going to share with you today one of my favorite winter scrapbooking collections I have on hand and am waiting to use!! This collection is actually from last year, but I never picked it up until this Fall. I just love it! That’s probably an understatement actually…I just love the colour combo and all the embellishments they’ve created for adorning your pages. It’s called Timbergrove by Fancy Pants Designs. Here are some of my favorite parts of the collection! Enjoy!

Clothespins! How clever.

Lots of journaling boxes and title cards and things!

Very cool and trendy tags to use to embellish your pages.

Love these pre made titles, makes my job so much easier!

Love these too!!

Titles! LOVE

Ephemera pack!! LOVE

Little paper bags, only about 2×3 and 3×4 or so. Pop a little journaling box inside!

The B side of the paper collection.

The gorgeous and bold and vibrant A side of the paper! LOVE

Embellishing with tickets is trendy these days, and Timbergrove has them too!

Oh, and before I go, here’s a pic of my old girl lazing on the bed next to me while I blog…..inside where it’s cozy and warm.

Have a great day everyone and stay warm!!

Hamburger Soup

January is upon us and it’s cozy, comfort food season. So today I thought I’d share an old Parker family favourite, hamburger soup. It is super easy to make and chances are you have all the ingredients in your house right now to make it, except maybe the celery and the barley. This soup is inexpensive and goes a long way too, which is always good after Christmas! It freezes well so you can split it into two containers and eat some now and freeze the rest for an easy meal to pull out and heat up on a busy day. Served with biscuits, rolls, homemade bread or crackers this makes a very satisfying meal.

So here’s the scoop. In a large soup pot brown 1 1/2 to 2 lbs lean ground beef with one medium onion chopped up finely in it. Once the ground beef is fully cooked drain off any excess fat, then add one 28 ounce can crushed or diced tomatoes, 2 cups of water, 3 cans of beef consommé, or beef broth works too, 1 can undiluted cream of tomato soup, 4 large sliced carrots, 3 stalks sliced celery, 1 bay leaf, sprinkle of parsley, 1/2 tsp thyme, 8 tbsp. pot barley, and salt and pepper. Bring up to a boil then turn back and allow to simmer on the stove over medium heat for 2-3 hours, covered, stirring occasionally. Now, I sometimes throw in about 1 cup frozen peas at the end too, and sometimes a handful of macaroni or other pasta of your choosing. I add these towards the end of the simmering though otherwise they cook up to mush. Adding pasta makes the soup thicker though, more like a stew than a soup. But it’s yummy!

Like I said this freezes well, and it is handy to freeze in individual portions and grab for a quick lunch on the go at work or whatever. Enjoy a bowl today! In fact, I think I’ll go make some now…..
